Pasta Bolognese

Ingredients (to serve 10 children)

800g chopped tinned tomatoes

70g tomato puree

4 carrots, chopped

1 pepper, chopped

1tsp dried oregano

625g lean beef mince (or micoprotein for vegetarian option)

1 onion, finely chopped

2 cloves of garlic, minced or chopped

500g wholewheat spaghetti

1tbsp olive oil

40g or a handful of basil leaves (optional)



  1. Turn the slow cooker onto low and add the tomatoes, puree, carrots, pepper and oregano
  2. Fry the mince until brown and cooked through. Then add the onion and garlic and continue to cook until these are soft
  3. Cook the ragu in a slow cooker for 4-5 hours on high, you may need some extra water
  4. Cook the pasta according to packet instructions, drain and coat in olive oil which will stop the pasta sticking together

Children’s kitchen activities: Cut up the basil using an old, robust coffee mug and a small pair of round tipped scissors. Sprinkle the chopped basil as a garnish to add flavour, colour and interest instead of parmesan cheese which will increase the fat content of the meal.
